Accessibility — NZS 4121:2001

  • NZS 4121:2001 Design for Access and Mobility: Buildings and Associated Facilities is cited under section 47A of the Building Act 1991 and serves as a compliance document for Clause D1 (Access Routes) of the New Zealand Building Code.
  • NZS 4121:2001 is currently under revision. Standards New Zealand and Whaikaha (the Ministry of Disabled People) are updating it to modernise accessibility expectations, broaden its focus beyond physical mobility to sensory, cognitive and neurodivergent access needs, and improve alignment with the Building Act and Building Code.

WaterMark and the New Recognition Pathway

The Lead-Free Plumbing Standard

  • For building consent applications lodged from 1 May 2026, copper alloy plumbing products in contact with drinking water - fittings, valves, taps, water filtration components included - must meet a maximum weighted average lead content of 0.25%, verified against NSF/ANSI/CAN 372.
  • Copper alloy components under hydrostatic pressure must also demonstrate dezincification resistance under AS 2345.
  • This follows an amendment to Building Code Acceptable Solution G12/AS1. It applies from the point a new consent is lodged - existing installed fountains do not need retrofitting.
  • Ask any supplier for a valid lead-free test certificate (IANZ-accredited or equivalent) before specifying a product for a consent lodged on or after 1 May 2026.
